Studies show that the health of people in the correctional system is generally poorer than that of people in the general community. Correct Care Australasia provides the same standard of on-site healthcare to prisoners.
Mental healthcare is provided by general practitioners and qualified mental health nurses at all Correct Care prison clinics (excluding the Melbourne Assessment Prison), with specialist support from visiting psychiatrists at most locations.
All prisoners with disabilities have access to the full range of prison health services. In addition, Correct Care refers to a number of specialised services covering cognitive impairment, sensory and physical disability and psychiatric disability are also provided.
Health services are provided from health centres located within each prison. Health centres look similar to general practice clinics in the community and are equipped to undertake a full range of primary health services including minor procedures such as suturing and biopsies.
